Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. (Romans 12:2)
This verse is fascinating if we really take the time to look at it. It even claims we can know the will of God! But how?
- There are many ways we can know God’s will (hint: the Bible gives us much direction in following God’s will), but it starts by being transformed
How are we transformed?
- By renewing our minds
What does this mean?
- Essentially, it means changing our thinking
Therefore, by changing our thinking (mind-renewal) we can change our behaviour (transformation), which leads to being able to “test and approve” (NIV) God’s will, which is contrary to self-serving principles of worldly thinking (patterns of this world).
Got all that?
Basically, by seeking God and letting Him bring us a deeper understanding of Him, we can change ourselves. If we change our thinking, we can change our behaviour. Where our thinking is destructive, so our behaviour will be also. If our behaviour is destructive, it is due to destructive thinking.
Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there by any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting! (Psalm 139:23-24)
This is a prayer we should all learn to pray. He knows the true way to a full life, better than we do—no matter what our thinking! We need to allow God to reveal to us the transformation that needs to happen in our lives by inviting Him in.
