Take a look at John 1 and we will learn that according to the Bible, Jesus is:

• God
• the Creator
• life
• light
• grace
• truth

Jesus is the ultimate expression of God’s lovingkindness, given to man so that we might be the light of the world. The most exciting thing about Jesus being light is that He makes this light available to us:

The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. (v. 9)

Jesus gives light to all people, and now that we have this light from Him, we are called to be light to those around us.

You are the light of the world…let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 5:14-16)

Being light means living like Jesus—with joy, peace, love, and compassion, living for others and not for ourselves—and this is how we make disciples, which means pointing others to Jesus, so that the result is that they praise God.

—> Basically, when we live with so much joy, when we constantly put others first—when we are light—people can’t help but ask, “Why are you doing this?”

Make them ask!

Three steps to being light:

1. Choose light — you have to want it! Make a decision to be light in your world, draw near to God and…
2. Receive light — Christ’s light is not something you earn, but something you ask for and receive because of His goodness. Remember v. 9 (above)? We receive light by turning to Jesus, the One who enlightens everyone.
3. Be light — walk in the power of Christ and in His Spirit and allow Him to work through you, pointing others to Him and shining His light.
